A wired connection beats WiFi for speed and stability, but running new Ethernet through walls is not always practical. Powerline and MoCA adapters are the two main workarounds - they carry your network over wiring you already have. Here is how the three options stack up.
Ethernet: the gold standard
A dedicated Ethernet cable is fastest, lowest-latency, and most reliable - full stop. If you can run a cable (even a flat one along a baseboard), do it. Modern cabling easily handles gigabit and beyond; see Ethernet cable categories for which grade to use. The only downside is the physical install.
MoCA: networking over coax
MoCA (Multimedia over Coax Alliance) sends your network over the coaxial TV cabling already wired into many homes. It is fast (current versions reach multi-gigabit) and notably stable - far more consistent than powerline. If you have coax outlets where you need network drops (behind the TV, in a bedroom), MoCA is often the best non-Ethernet option. You need an adapter at each end and a coax run between them.
Powerline: networking over electrical wiring
Powerline adapters plug into wall outlets and use your home's electrical wiring to carry data. They are the easiest to set up - plug one in near the router, another near your device. The catch is that real-world speed and reliability vary a lot with the age and layout of your wiring, whether outlets share a circuit, and electrical noise from appliances. Plug them directly into the wall, never a power strip.
